The Environment

A compassionate community education and follow up program addressing the key causes and transmission routes of disease is necessary before any health impact from water filtration is possible. The key causes and transmission routes of disease in developing countries are: 

·         Poor sanitation related to appropriate and well-maintained excreta disposal
·         Poor water quality and quantity for hygiene purposes
·         Poor knowledge and practice related to personal hygiene and food contamination
·         Poor overcrowded housing with inadequate drainage

The key to sustainability of the positive health impact of a safe water project is confirming correct, consistent and continuous use of the appropriate technology in the context of the community wide water, sanitation, and hygiene improvements.
